Charles Oliveira‘s missed weigh-in ahead of his lightweight title defence at UFC 274 initially generated an outpouring of shock and disbelief on Twitter.

That tone shifted within hours to sympathy and support for Oliveira. Questions have been asked less about his integrity but more about the scale, and of the weigh-in official’s competence. The overall feel is more “hard luck, son” than “you dumb bastard.”

More importantly is the feeling that Oliveira was robbed. That he remains the rightful champ. Below is a selection of top posts from MMA Twitter.

The stark reality of this morning? 99 out of 100 commission officials likely give Charles Oliveira the benefit of the doubt there and just announce him as 155 lbs. He caught the wrong one on the wrong day. Incredibly unfortunate all around. #UFC274

Norma Dumont and Ariane Carnelossi told me the hotel scale was reset overnight and many fighters found out on Friday morning they were 2lbs heavier than they thought.

Don't know if that was the case with Charles Oliveira, whose coach posted last night he had already made weight.

Asking questions that deserve to be asked. Worth a quick read.

Charles Oliveira may not have officially missed weight. Because Arizona appears to not have held proper weigh ins. https://t.co/1ceWjrhaR2

That type of commentary prompted the commission doing the weighing to issue a statement in its defence.

The Arizona Boxing & MMA Commission issued a statement to @mma_kings about talk of an improperly calibrated scale at #UFC274 weigh-ins and if it caused Charles Oliveira to be heavy.

Oliveira clearly has support from fighters, including division contender Islam Makhachev, who doesn’t care who his next opponent is.

Anyway, keep your head up Charles and good luck tomorrow, we all know you’re champ for a reason. And I’m looking to fight the winner of this fight, either for vacant title or new LW champion 🏆

Making weight is always hard. But thinking you’re on weight, then missing weight, just to have to go lose more weight after you’ve lost your initial sweat is a living nightmare both physically and mentally. #ufc274

For his part, Oliveira was incredulous, claiming that he had made weight during his own weigh in prior to the official weigh in:

Regardless, Oliveira’s fight against Justin Gaethje will go ahead, with lots of questions about how this weigh-in drama will affect both fighters. Oliveira issued one simple tweet of his own after the weigh in with a simple inference: The show will go on.
