Mark Striegl views training in the U.S. as a blessing.
The Philippine fighter has been in camp at MMA Lab in Arizona, with coaches George Castro and John Crouch, preparing for his next fight. A featherweight bout will pit “Mugen” against Chas Skelly at UFC Fight Night on Feb. 19.
Phoenix is a world away from his home country where Covid-19 has shuttered many gyms, forcing Striegl and his training partners into privately run home gyms. Training in Arizona is another story, where Stiegl is enjoying the benefit of “just having everything in one place,” he told The AllStar.
“In Manila, I have to move around a lot,” he said. “Go to one place for striking, go to one place for wrestling, go to another place for strength and conditioning. You really have to structure your training like that. Versus here a lot of camps in the US, a lot of the bigger camps everything is really in one place which is convenient and nice.
“I got to work with Bryce Meredith who is a four-time NCAA All-American and great wrestler,” Striegl said. “Having high-level training partners that I get to work with daily, it’s a blessing.”
Striegl views his match-up against Skelly as “an opportunity,” much like his last fight, a first-round loss to Said Nurmagomedov in October 2020.
“Your next fight is always your biggest fight and every fight is a big opportunity to prove yourself and get your name in the mix,” Streigl said. “Chas has been fighting in the UFC since 2014 so he’s a UFC vet and I think it’s a good fight for me. If I can get this W, it puts me right in the mix with everything in the UFC featherweight division.
“His nickname ‘The Scrapper’ fits his skillset,” Streigl said. “He’s just a scrappy, tough veteran. He makes it an ugly fight a lot of the time. So with a guy like that, I just got to make sure that I’m sharp and I come in good shape.”
