Lionel Messi’s confidant and former Argentina teammate Sergio Aguero has leaked that the PSG star may soon be heading home to Argentina.
The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner is currently linked to several different clubs. The former Manchester City striker believes that Messi will return to his boyhood club. In an interview with Brazil’s UOL, Aguero lifted the lid saying, “He is seriously considering the possibility of playing for Newell’s.”
Maxi Rodriquez downplays Newell’s rumor
Former Liverpool and Newell’s Old Boys midfielder Maxi Rodriguez quickly shot down Aguero’s claims saying, “Kun is Kun. He can’t keep quiet. We will see. It is hard to talk about this because then a giant ball of rumours is made. Let’s wait and see what happens. We will not get ahead of the facts.”
Messi will play in a testimonial for Rodriguez this summer. The match will be a celebration of the three spells he had at Newell’s Old Boys. The club will view Messi’s participation as a trial and will attempt to sign him as soon as his PSG contract expires.
A Newell’s Old Boys Legend
The World Cup winner spend five years at Newell’s academy. Messi netted 234 goals in 176 matches for Newell’s Old Boys between the ages of 6 to 11. He was also a ball boy for the club before he moving to Spain to join Barcelona’s youth set-up.
Messi has been in fine form for PSG this season after struggling in his first year with the club. The 35 year-old has scored 16 goals and added 14 assists so far this season, surpassing his numbers for last season.
He’s been close friends with Aguero for nearly two decades. The pair always roomed together when on international duty together. The bond is so close that the now retired Aguero shared a room with Messi in Qatar. Aguero attended the final and hoisted Messi above his shoulders after Argentina’s victory over France.
