Randy Costa has been a fan favorite in the UFC since he joined in 2019. However, after his two most recent losses, Costa had to take a step back from his fighting career.
“In hindsight, it was definitely what I needed. If you asked me this question at the beginning of the year my answer would’ve been ‘you know, I want to fight ASAP,’ and that was the plan. I thought I was going to be fighting in March or something like that – It definitely sucked, right it definitely sucked but I needed it, man. Because that fight back in December, that was a terrible performance like I don’t know where the fuck I was man.”
Costa didn’t realize it at the time, but the layoff was a blessing in disguise. Being forced to sit and dwell on that loss gave the Northeast native a great opportunity to reflect on his performance.
“I think I just needed it to like really sting and really needed it to – really hurt and just sit, not in my sorrows but sit in the pain and have this shitty taste in my mouth and just really use that as motivation – ‘fuck this feeling, this feeling sucks, I don’t want to feel this anymore’ – the long layoff sucked for a lot of things but it was great for a lot of things.”
The 28-year-old now gets to face the six-year UFC veteran Guido Cannetti. The Argentinian is 42 years old and Costa says he’s quite familiar with Cannetti’s work.
“I’m familiar with Guido, that’s a fight that I figured would’ve happened or will happen in my career. Only because he’s an older guy with a, maybe a not-so-great record and not many fights and I’m a guy who’s younger with not many fights who maybe has some potential. So, you typically see those types of guys going with each other and I think this fight makes sense right now.”
Regardless of Cannetti’s record, Costa knows better than underestimating his opponent. He knows how good his opponent is, but his preparation is what he believes will make the difference in this matchup.
“I just think that I’m so much better than him. I think I’m trickier than him, I think that I’m more technically sound, (and) I have way more weapons. But, (the) boy can fucking punch man, he can hit, he can knock people out. He’s tough, he’s a gamer, he’s an Argentinian street-fighter man, he’s fucking tough.
“You’ve got to give respect where it’s due and I 100% respect his skillset but I’m coming in to win man. I’m coming in to put his lights out. I’m aware of the threats but I’m going to nullify them. I’m very confident in my preparation and the things that I’ve done over these last fucking ten months.”
