Not only did Anthony Hernandez pick up the win in an action-packed fight, but he also made a little bit of history.
“Fluffy” drowned his opponent Marc-André Barriault in overwhelming style, then became the first man ever to force Barriault to tap out. Hernandez, however, was none the wiser about his unique accomplishment.
“That’s dope, I didn’t know I was the first one to submit him. But, I feel good about it (that’s) kind of what I wanted to go out there and do, just go out there and show a well-rounded MMA gameplan.”
The wildest part about his performance was the adversity he faced with a thumb injury. Hernandez detailed the events of his affliction as they happened.
“My hand was just feeling super weird. I looked down (and) I was like ‘oh mother fucker’. My thumb was just like – the tip of it was just pointing to the left, I was like ‘mother fucker’. Then Jim (West) was like, “Shut up, shut up, the doctors,” – then Tom (Fallon) came over and just fucking yanked it, put it back in place, and then we just tried to go from there. I kept throwing it, punching but like after it fucking hurt like a bitch.”
Hernandez also noted that he has not seen a doctor yet, but will have x-ray procedures done soon to further evaluate the status of his thumb.
A lot of fans were in uproar that Hernandez was not awarded a post-fight bonus for his performance. While the card did have some exciting fights, many felt it was an oversight to not recognize his bout. Some were speculating that perhaps Hernandez was given one of those fabled “locker room bonuses” but according to him, there was no secret check to be collected.
When asked if the company provided him with a non-discretionary bonus, Hernandez simply put it, “Nah, they didn’t but it’s all good, it is what it is – just got to keep showing out then, that’s all that means – After the fight, I went and just took some edibles and watched (Andre) Fili and them, then (I) got high as fuck then dipped out.”
