What’s another short-notice fight for Jared Vanderaa?
The massive heavyweight is prepping to fill in, once again, as a late replacement. This time, he’ll stand opposite Chase Sherman this weekend at UFC Vegas 58. It’s a circumstance he’s all too familiar with.
Coming off the back of a first-round loss after stepping in last-minute to face grizzled veteran Aleksei Oleinik at UFC 273, Vanderaa has a revitalized drive to get his career back on track – and he can’t think of a better way to start than punching Sherman right in the kisser.
“He has a very punchable face,” the 30-year-old proclaimed to The AllStar.
Vanderaa clarified his statement, insisting his feelings have naught to do with Sherman’s character – “it’s just the face looks very punchable. That’s it.”
“I’m pretty sure I have a punchable face to some people,” he continued. “So I get it.”
Looking at his opponent through a more profound lens, Vanderaa believes he’s noticed Sherman’s skill inside the Octagon wane in recent times and pointed out the Jake Collier bout as a prime example of his decline.
“I actually had Chase potentially doing a lot more in that fight, and just to see him flop on the floor, I was just like ‘wow.’”
He personally considered ‘The Vanilla Gorilla’ a “phenomenal striker” in the past, but holds the belief that a change in camps has led to his recent lackluster performances.
“I don’t want to discredit the gentleman, but I definitely think when he was at Jackson-Wink he was a lot more on point, and now I don’t see him utilizing it as much as he has before.”
The blueprint to securing the win against Sherman was exposed in his previous two excursions, Vanderaa claims – and he’ll be looking to follow it on the 9th of July.
“I might punch him, take him down and try to repeat his last two fights, and win in the first. That’d be cool.”
But he reiterated, “I would like to punch Chase in the face at least once in this whole fight.”
A win on Saturday night sets Vanderaa back in the right direction after a three-fight losing streak. He’s well aware of the fact that the end of his current contract draws near, and knows he’ll likely need two straight wins to keep his spot in the promotion.
Vanderaa has been taking the steps required to make sure the chips are stacked in his favor when that time comes.
“We are professional athletes and, you know, we need to hold ourselves to a higher standard.”
“I look at myself daily and I’m like ‘yo I’m in the biggest sport, I haven’t been showing up to these fights, so let me fix my physique, let me fix my mental game, and let me come out there and just win these fights’… Let me win the next two fights and maybe Mick will offer me an extension on the contract. So that’s kind of my mindset going into this fight, and into my next fight, whoever that may be.”
