The battle for German MMA supremacy will be waged at UFC Paris on September 3rd.
Two touted middleweights who both cut their teeth on the German regional circuit will finally get their chance to square off inside the Octagon when Dustin Stoltzfus meets UFC newcomer, Abusupiyan Magomedov, on the historic first card to grace the shores of France; a stone’s throw from the country in which they both reside.
The pair had circled each other for a time while building their respective brands ‘at home’ in Germany (oddly enough, neither man was born there); but never got the chance to test their mettle against one another in those early stages of their careers.
Now, after years of trailing behind Magomedov on regional rankings, Stoltzfus gets his opportunity to prove once and for all who is the king of German middleweights.
“I think he’s been ranked above me here in the regional scene since I’ve come on to the scene,” Stoltzfus told The AllStar of Magomedov. “A lot of German fans are complaining about having us fight each other – which I get. But the other side of this is now we’re really going to see who’s the best middleweight in Germany – and for the eight years I’ve been over here, it’s always been Abus. So now it’s like, alright, is it Abus, or is it me?”
The 30-year-old added that it is ‘a nice little plus’ to have that crown hanging in the balance on fight night, and he has no qualms about snatching it off his forthcoming adversary.
“It’s not like I’m fighting a buddy of mine or something like that. I know who he is, he knows who I am, but we don’t have – we’re not friends. So it makes it a little bit less awkward.”
Knowing just who his opponent is, however, Stoltzfus understands the scope of the task ahead of him, and isn’t expecting a stroll in the park come fight night.
“It’s a tough matchup. The guy’s good.”
“It’s a winnable fight,” Stoltzfus reiterated. “it’s definitely doable. But he’s gonna go out there, put on the pace. He has a sort of a long, rangey style – and then some good wrestling to back it up. So it’s definitely gonna be a tough fight, but I’m looking forward to it.”
Akin to most battles fought in pursuit of a crown, Stoltzfus promises an all-out war once the cage door is closed; and he plans to live, or die, by his sword.
“It’s a stylistic fight where I’m gonna have to go in there and take the fight to him. So it’s going to be exciting. Fight fans, whether they’re german or just in general are gonna have a good fight to watch. Just stylistically it’s going to be an exciting fight. We’re not just gonna stand there and look at each other the whole time.”
“It’s gonna be a bite down on your mouthpiece and fight sort of fight.”
