Just over a year ago, Lupita Godinez was debuting in the UFC on short notice. Today, she’s about to make her fifth walk to the Octagon.
“Loopy” was one of the most active fighters on the roster in 2021, fighting four times in just seven months. Every fight, whether a victory or defeat, showed her value as a martial artist and entertainer. Moreover, she earned the respect of the fanbase for repeatedly stepping up on short notice to save fights.
Godinez reflected on the wild sprint of 2021 which provided UFC veteran experience.
“I grew a lot, I learned so much, you know, to be in the cage so many times,” Godinez told The AllStar. “Having that experience so many times in a row is amazing. You cannot get that experience outside, right? It was great, that really helped me as a fighter to evolve.”
The pressure and jitters of elevating to the UFC can be a learning process, and Godinez is thankful for the multiple exposures that allowed her to normalize the UFC experience. The fight week rituals became like going to work at the office for her. However, she didn’t lose the joy of fighting and special moments with her team along the way.
Godinez’s fifth UFC fight is coming up, and she’s taking on a powerful finisher in Ariane Carnelossi, who sits just outside the rankings. Unlike last year, she has enjoyed a long break before this fight- she last fought six months ago.
Godinez lives in Vancouver, Canada, and trains at Titan MMA. She’s been there her whole career and gets rounds in at 10th Planet as well. Concerning travel to gyms outside her home, she said, “I love traveling just because I get to train with new people and I get to meet new people and I get to learn new things, I get to learn other stuff from different coaches because I’m pretty open-minded. I’m always trying to learn. I don’t care if that’s not the same style that I’m doing. If I like that technique, I’m just going to add it into my bag you know.
“But not traveling is just easier I guess. I have my home, I have my own stuff, my car, you know my family that is super important for me. Coaches and I- we have like super close relationship. It’s just easier I guess.
The grinding, physical style of Godinez is keen for a fast-paced fight against Carnelossi on May 7th. Godinez knows the risks of young finisher like her, and said, “I love the matchup you know, I’m so excited to fight this girl. She’s aggressive, she’s gonna come for work…I have to be smart in there and I just have to be sharp. Every second of the fight I have to be sharp.”
“Loopy” is ready to shine in all areas of the fight, also striving for the finish, like her opponent: “I want to obviously have a great performance, I want to showcase my hands, make her fly a little bit, ground and point, submissions.”
