Steven Peterson usually has a lot of respect for his opponents, but that’s not the case for his next UFC rival Julian Erosa.
Things got a little strange after Peterson’s last fight, the 31-year-old featherweight told The AllStar. After that victory against Chase Hooper, Peterson promptly called out Nate Landwehr, in turn prompting a call out from Erosa to fight him.
“I guess Erosa was like, ‘well I beat Landwehr so I should fight him.’ He went into my message requests and after the fight, I have freaking hundreds of them,” Peterson said. “I don’t even go through most of them. So I took notice when he started commenting on my stuff. He’s been talking shit for some time.”
“The main mental approach is the fact that I dislike or I don’t care for my opponent this time,” he said. “Normally, I’m indifferent about my opponent. I have more in common with my opponent than I do with most of the people I hang out with, you know, my good friends. We have the same goals in common. We’re chasing the same dream.
“So I generally have a lot of respect for my opponents but Julian Erosa I just feel like…he’s a weirdo.”
In spite of that, Peterson has been studying his opponent’s game carefully ahead of their UFC Fight Night clash on Feb. 5.
“He’s good. He’s long. He’s tall for the weight class. 26-9, that’s a lot of wins,” Peterson said. “Comparing my record, I’m 19-9. I feel like I fought a higher level of competition early on in my career but he’s also fought a high level of competition when he got to the UFC earlier in his career and he had some setbacks.
“He definitely has a lot of really good tools and attributes about him so it makes for a really interesting fight getting in there.”
What then is Peterson’s prediction for the fight?
“Julian Erosa is going to sleep February 5th,” he said. “No doubt about it.”
