As a former law enforcement officer, UFC heavyweight Chris Daukaus has a unique perspective on the attempted murder charge that former champion Cain Velasquez is facing.
Defending Velasquez will be complicated, Daukaus told The AllStar, citing the emotional motivations for the offense, while recognizing the legal barriers. Daukaus recently left the Philadelphia police department to focus on MMA full-time and is also a father of young children.
Wrestling with the complexity of the matter, Daukaus said, “I get it as a father of a son and soon-to-be daughter, I completely get it, but if I’m speaking from the police officer’s side obviously you can’t do that and he’s going to be charged.”
Velasquez was arrested last month after he allegedly tried to shoot and kill a man who has been accused of molesting his young relative. Velasquez was denied bail, while the accused molester was granted supervised release after his release.
Daukaus decried that decision: “It shows you a little bit about our criminal justice system, especially in California.”
UFC chief Dana White and more than 30 MMA luminaries have come out officially in support of Velasquez, according to ESPN. Daniel Cormier, a former UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champion, was among those that wrote letters commending Velasquez.
“Now I’ve never met Cain personally,” Daukaus said. “Just from everything I’ve seen…Cain seems to be an awesome dude and the people who are surrounded by Cain, like DC, I don’t think DC would surround himself with “pieces of shit”…I kind of got the idea that Cain is a really standup guy.”
