‘Hurricane’ Shane Burgos is aiming for “beautiful violence” when he steps in the ring on July 16.
The New York native is slated to defend his spot in the featherweight rankings against a fellow heavy-handed striker in Canadian prospect Charles Jourdain at UFC on ABC 3 in Long Island. He looks to make it two wins in a row after getting the judge’s nod in a high-paced outing with Billy Quarantillo late last year.
Burgos had no qualms divulging his goal for the important featherweight division matchup.
“Beautiful violence. Cub Swanson said it. I love that, ‘beautiful violence’. From the first bell to the last bell I’ll be in his face,” the 31-year-old shared with The AllStar. “He knows that, and he’s gonna break. My pressure, I think, is gonna be too much for him and I’m gonna break him before that last bell.”
“I’m getting the finish this time.”
Before debuting in the UFC, Burgos won all seven of his professional fights without getting the judges involved. As a fighter that prides himself on finishes, it irks him to no end that five of his total ten fights inside the promotion have gone the distance -and a ‘Fight of the Night’ bonus isn’t a consolation prize that he’s hunting for.
“I don’t want any more fucking decisions man. I definitely don’t want any more fight of the nights. Everybody knows me as the fight of the night guy – I don’t want to be known as that guy. I want to be known as the performance of the night guy.”
Burgos admitted that the urge to be an ‘exciting’ fighter for the fans was a facet that affected his previous performances on the big stage – and that’s an aspect of his game he’s dialled in on as of late. The 145-pounder claims he had to take a step back and reevaluate his priorities inside the Octagon; he’s now focused on getting the job done “completely” before the final horn sounds.
As if the stakes weren’t high enough already, ‘Hurricane’ also revealed that he was fighting out his UFC contract with this bout. He’s gambling on himself and aiming to renegotiate with the promotion for a fat paycheck going forward once he gets the win.
It isn’t the first time he’s backed himself into a corner like this – and being undefeated in New York in six fights, Burgos likes his odds of success.
“The last time I was in this position I was fighting a southpaw, he’s another southpaw. I was fighting in Madison Square Garden which is in New York, now I’m fighting in Elmont, New York. So it’s funny. the stars are aligning for another big finish here. Another big contract coming up.”
“I’m betting on me. I’m putting all my chips on red and [letting] it roll.”
