Ian Garry‘s hype seems like it’s continuing to increase. To a scale where Garry is getting compared to Conor McGregor by some.
That magnitude of hyperbole is very much not phasing Darian Weeks as he readies to test skills against the Irishman at UFC 273 on April 9 in Jacksonville, Florida.
“To each their own I guess, you know what I mean? For them to compare him to Conor McGregor is kind of premature. But then again, Conor McGregor has lost his last three fights. So to compare yourself to McGregor right now might not be the best situation for you.,” Weeks told The AllStar.
“But it is what it is. I’m going to go in there and do what I got to do…Him being looked at as the new best thing doesn’t mean anything to me. I’m going to employ my game.”
While Weeks would prefer to have his unbeaten record, he understands he needed to learn some lessons from that first pro defeat. The utility of growing from that loss in his UFC debut which he accepted on a weeks’ notice.
Factors like the big weight cut lead to an effort Weeks saw as less than satisfactory. The feelings associated with the Bryan Barberena December defeat have caused his game has been reignited.
Hulett House MMA is still the base of operations and Weeks is steadily working there amid this reignited run. This keeps Weeks grounded in his hometown. It’s where he started his MMA career and doesn’t want to get “too big for his britches” by keeping it local.
“I feel that he’s a traditional kickboxer,” Weeks said about Garry. “You can tell his skills. But I don’t feel like they’re world-class. I don’t feel like he has world-class skills. I feel like he doesn’t even have a world-class defense.
“As we had seen in his first fight where he was getting touched up quite a bit. Before he went ahead, threw to the wind, and got the W. So I don’t feel like he’s the most dangerous guy I’m going to fight and I feel like he’s very beatable.”
While the fight prediction wasn’t specific as far as a particular technique or a certain round, Weeks seems poised to generate a highlight reel win that will garner a tremendous amount of buzz.
“It is an important win,” Weeks said. “Not only this, it’s a win that is a hundred percent possible. All we have to do is go in there, stick to the game plan, and we get this.
“This is something that we want really bad. It’s going to feel really great to have. Not only that but probably on one of the biggest cards of the year. This is where we make our mark. This is where we establish our name and we go on further and further… It’s going to feel great.”
