Miranda Maverick is ready to show the MMA world how well-rounded she is.
Maverick returns to action for the first time in 2022 at UFC Vegas 50. She is taking a fight on short notice for the second fight in a row. She replaces Mandy Bohm to face Sabina Mazo.
Both fighters are riding the first losing streak of their careers. Maverick sees the fight between the two as extremely important for their longevity with the organization, although she sees herself dominating the fight.
“She’s longer. She has that reach advantage and is primarily a striker. But I feel like in every area, really, I can dominate this fight. I’m on a losing streak, and she’s on a losing streak. One of us has a lot to lose in this fight, and I feel like I’m not the one that will lose,” Maverick told The AllStar.
Before the Mazo fight fell into Maverick’s lap, the night before, she was offered to fight her teammate and training partner JJ Aldrich.
“That’s another reason why I was so eager to take it,” Maverick revealed. “The night before I was offered Sabina, I got offered to fight JJ Aldrich. My manager messaged me and was like, ‘I’m pretty sure she’s your teammate, but just in case, you got the offer to fight JJ.’ I was like, oh, she is my teammate.
“In fact, I would say I’m one of her primary training partners at times. We all laughed about it, and Mick [Maynard] said that he got confused about who’s team everybody was on. And so we went back to the drawing board, and I was like ‘uh, now I wait for another month in a half..but then the Sabina offer came the next day. What are the odds?”
Aldrich faced Mazo back in 2020 as well as her other training partner Shana Dobson in 2019. Maverick can take lessons from her teammates but cannot solely rely on that information.
“They can tell you the reality versus what you can see on the TV,” Maverick said. “They can tell you whether a person hits hard or not. They can tell you how something feels.
“I do just get what knowledge I can from them going into the fight and the rest is just based on me analyzing her fights and me being prepared myself.”
With Mazo in her sights next weekend, Maverick plans to live up to the hype that everyone put on her when she entered the UFC. She wants to show how skillful she really is.
“I’m going to show that I am well-rounded, you know, I think everyone talked about it before, and in the last fight, it was less in people’s minds,” Maverick said.
“I want to show that I have the grappling, I have the stand-up, I have the forward pressure, I can also move backwards. I can do whatever I need to do in that fight to win, to show that high fight IQ. That’s the goal going into this fight, get another win under my belt and renegotiate my contract and stick around in the UFC for years to come.”
