On paper, Dwight Grant facing off against Sergey Khandozhko on April 23rd at UFC Vegas 52 looks like it could turn into a striker’s delight.
Grant sees the knockout manifesting in the first or second stanza. The American specified that he thinks it will be a one-round fight if his opponent does not utilize the wrestling.
Grant has four split decisions in the UFC with a .500 record across those splits. His last outing had that very same verdict; a defeat to Francisco Trinaldo in October.
Waiting on that last judge’s word can be quite nerve-wracking and the onus has been on Grant lately to subvert those feelings. A more cerebral approach and less of an emotional one in recent fights has been adopted following this string of close results.
Khandozhko’s striking approach is one that Grant has a studious awareness of and he sees openings to exploit this weekend.
“He’s able to use his ability, his length, and his body type to the best,” Grant told The AllStar. “Using his range, his footwork is compensating for some holes in his Boxing. Footwork fixes it up a bit. He could be kind of free and protect himself. But I’ve been sparring with Luke Rockhold for like seven years. A tall guy that hits hard is what I’m accustomed to. This guy, he’s my size.
“So I’m happy about that. His style is different from mine more that he doesn’t do Kung Fu. He’s going to be doing straight up Muay Thai and straight-up boxing. I’m going to hit him from angles that he’s not accustomed to. I’m sure that his coaches are probably preparing him for some of that. But training for this fight, I’ve leaned more into me than anything else”
Grant started watching old martial arts movies from his earlier years and having himself get reacquainted with what brought him to the dance.
Khandozhko has a Muay Thai base and is someone who Grant has seen previous interviews from where he was indicating he does not care for grappling exchanges.
Grant seems to see that talking point as a way to obfuscate his true intentions to take Grant down. The aforementioned dynamic of several split decisions seems to inform a pursuit for a more emphatic finish. A desire that seemed to resonate in Grant’s fight prediction.
“I’m gonna be trying to end this fight as quickly as possible,” Grant said. “I don’t mean that in an ‘I want to get out of there’ way. I want to enjoy my time there but I’m trying to finish it. It’s not even in a mean and aggressive kind of way either. But I do want to finish this fight. I love kickboxing and Muay Thai. So I know we’re going to at least get a good probably two, three minutes of striking.”
“I’m going to be aggressive for sure but he’s going to try to take me down. When that happens, I’ll be able to defend it and do all this other stuff. I just suspect he’ll try to take me down within the first round.”
